Research - CSA #1 MC Lit

Hey, Friends!

Now, we will begin our Research CSA.  We have broken it down into small parts so it is manageable. The first part requires you to find TWO CREDIBLE SOURCES AND WRITE THREE PARAGRAPHS.  We think you can manage that. 

Argue:  Which of the following pieces of legislation has been most transformative on a minority culture group in America?
  • IDEA (1975)
  • Voting Rights Act (1965)
  • Marriage Equality Act (2015)
  • Forced Assimilation of Native Americans (Boarding Schools) 1880 - 1934
  • Title IX - Equal opportunity for Females (1971)
 This endeavor will take many steps - small ones to begin with.

  1.   Basic Research on each topic.  Which one is most interesting, most critical, can you write well upon..........
  2. Begin ACADEMIC research on your topic.  This means the first part of your argument is based in "Factual Information."  (sites that are .edu, .org, .gov)  You may not use .com sites for this...................NOT AT ALL, SO DON'T ASK.  In this step, you will investigate the workings of the Act, the history behind it, details of it, who it affected and how was it effective?!

  4.   Piece together the first 1/3rd of your argument.  Argument of Fact - See handout
  5.  Length requirement: Introductory paragraph with a thesis, one complete body paragraph, and a conclusion.
  6. Cite your sources using MLA format, and include a working Works Cited page.  With each new addition to the paper, you will add to your Works Cited page.

    Citing non-print or sources from the Internet

    With more and more scholarly work being posted on the Internet, you may have to cite research you have completed in virtual environments. While many sources on the Internet should not be used for scholarly work (reference the OWL's Evaluating Sources of Information resource), some Web sources are perfectly acceptable for research. When creating in-text citations for electronic, film, or Internet sources, remember that your citation must reference the source in your Works Cited.
    Sometimes writers are confused with how to craft parenthetical citations for electronic sources because of the absence of page numbers, but often, these sorts of entries do not require any sort of parenthetical citation at all. For electronic and Internet sources, follow the following guidelines:
  9. Include in the text the first item that appears in the Work Cited entry that corresponds to the citation (e.g. author name, article name, website name, film name).
  10. You do not need to give paragraph numbers or page numbers based on your Web browser’s print preview function.
  11. Unless you must list the Web site name in the signal phrase in order to get the reader to the appropriate entry, do not include URLs in-text. Only provide partial URLs such as when the name of the site includes, for example, a domain name, like CNN.com or Forbes.com as opposed to writing out http://www.cnn.com or http://www.forbes.com.
PLEASE REMEMBER: This is fulfilling the research requirement.  Instead of writing a giant paper, we felt this was more authentic and near what your first semester college English course will be like.

This is due by October 15TH, 1159 PM.  Each part is a 50 point summative grade, and there will be three parts.

Do some research.  Investigate.  Make a claim.  Write well.

"13th"

Argument in Documentary Film:

Friends, one of the highest level of thinking takes place when you think about your own thinking and understand the ways in which you are manipulated, even when it still works.  You need to respond to two questions, and WRITE WELL.  Seriously.
While thinking about the audience, the subject, the purpose of the movie, answer the following:

First:
Write argue what the most effective piece of rhetoric was in the film.  You choose.  Archival footage, voice over, logical evidence, piecing together of historical events, audience, purpose, tone, etc.  Provide evidence and explain yourself.

Next:
Argue about the least effective piece of rhetoric is in the film.  You must explain why.  Justify your answer as you did in the first paragraph.

Your response is due by September 17th by 1156 pm.  This is an academic endeavor.

Welcome!

Dear Class of 2018,

Wow.  We have much to accomplish.  Before we even begin to talk about rhetoric or argumentation, we need to talk about what we consume...........as readers, as viewers, as buyers.........

After reading the article in class titled "What is Fake News?" your job is to:
1)  Read this proclamation/set of guidelines from AP News

2) Respond to the differences in what makes up "Fake News" and "Real News".  Are the guidelines set up by AP News really achievable?  How do we know journalists won't fall victim to the same traps as those who write fake news?

3)  Do some research.  Find 3 BRAND NEW TO YOU news sources that you find to be credible.  They MAY NOT BE any major/cable news network.  Digital or print.  List them.  Also, what about them makes them credible????????

All of your responses come in the "comments" section.  Make certain that you type your name in at the beginning of your comment, just as if you were typing a paper.

CSA #2 = RESEARCH (In Three Parts)

Friends!!!!!

We are very near the end of our school time together.  We must complete the second CSA, which is research.

We are dividing the research into three parts, based on the types of research you must do find.  For each of the three sections, YOU WILL KEEP THE SAME ARGUMENT.  We will be working on researching, argumentation, and writing in all three parts.

What are you researching??  Here is your prompt:

  • Brown v. Board of Education

First Research

This week, you are going to find an ACADEMIC article over a topic you would like to discuss.  YOU are going to find the article, send the link in your comment, complete the SOAPSTone process on your article, and make an argument about why this would be so ACADEMICALLY fitting for our class.

.gov, .edu..........................if the article is published at a university or from our local, state, or federal government, it will be acceptable.

After those options, NOTHING ELSE IS AS A CREDIBLE SOURCE THIS FIRST TIME.  Can you hear me yelling?

If you try to use the USA Today, MSNBC, FOX News as sources......................the best grade you can hope to get is a 50%.  We are demanding Academic credibility for the first article you find.

Islamophobia

Hello, Friends!!

In the articles we read about Islamophobia, your assignment is this:

1)  Study the Audience.  To whom would these articles be directed?  What is their demographic?  How do you know?  Prove it.

2)  Why this Subject?  What makes this so much more relevant than it was 10 years ago?  Why is it important to discuss in a class like ours?

3)  Purpose - what were the authors of these two articles trying to accomplish?  Were their individual purposes met?  Yes?  No?  Prove it.

You need to write about 10 sentences total in responding to the questions asked.  Use textual evidence to defend your positions.

This is easy.  Be thoughtful.  Write well.

In the section of the book we read, there is a clear argument presented.

  • What is the author's argument?
  • How does the author STRUCTURE the argument?
  • Is the purpose of the author effectively met?  If so, how?  If not, why not?  What structures aid or hinder the message of the author?  How does the use of language help or hinder the purpose?
  •  In what ways is this chapter related to so many other articles we have read and documentaries we have watched?  What factor binds American workers together?
  • Where is the hope?????

12 - 15 sentences.  Write well.  Be thoughtful and well-spoken.  Don't let me down.

"Grace"

"Grace" Seems an interesting title.

In a Christian sense, it is the "free and unmerited favor of God" but I'm not certain that any child in any of these articles found themselves to be a child of "favor."

This week, we are practicing a different skill.

This is reader-response criticism.  You need to acknowledge and analyze the argument presented in the article you chose to read.  Tell me where you found a thesis, what the author's message is, and what readers are to take away from these articles.  Next, you need to respond in a human way.  The connections you make with any part of either of these articles is valid, and it is your job to prove how.  If you have a grandparent much like Paul, if you know someone in Foster-Care, if you have political ideas about how to change or manage the system, if you have facts and figures and research you'd like to share, if you know someone who has dedicated their lives to saving children...........anything of this nature, is valid and worthy, and your job is to write about those connections.

It needs to be a personal, insightful, and well - thought - out piece of writing.  Length?  I don't know, long enough to be clear and precise?  12 - 15 sentences.

Write well.

Be thoughtful. 

Your writing assignment is due on Sunday October 16th by 1156 pm.........  =)

"It's a Third World Country..............."

There are multiple parts to this weeks' assignment.

1)  You need to watch carefully when we view the "Chi-Raq" documentary.  You need to take notes over logistics - how many similarities there are between the two communities, one in Kentucky, the other, Chicago.  Also, there is (are) glaring dissimilarity (ies).  What are those?  Why?

2) Select one issue: drugs, poverty, government, police, working poor, lack of jobs, lack of education, drug laws/drug sentences, logical fallacies, the use of Anecdotal Evidence.......SELECT ONE (or a group of) lines, facts, statistics, anything.  Explain why that particular item struck you so much.  What did it relate to?  Remind you of?  Make you think of?????

3)  The Guardian is a British Newspaper.  What is the First World's view of America?  What in particular was the slant  - the piece of irony, as they saw it - that came out in this piece of writing?  Why?  How would you like for America to be known?  For what reasons?

So......this article is much longer than any other yet this semester, and because of that, Mrs. J and I are giving you until:

Septermber 18th - 24th!

Islam.

Anti-Islamic rhetoric has led to multiple negative experiences and encounters for hundreds of Muslims in the United States. Read both articles provided about Muslim Americans working and learning in our nation's public schools. As you read, consider the intended audiences and the purpose of these articles. Write your response to the questions below in 12-15 sentences.


1. Explain what rhetorical approaches Shah and Sharim use in response to "Islamophobia" (ethos/logos/pathos) and why you think their approaches or rebuttals are effective or ineffective.
2. Explain why you think it is significant to discuss topics like this in a high school classroom.

Make certain you maintain your objectivity while answering the first question, and then you may insert a more conversational tone while answering the second question.

Requirements:
  • Read CRITICALLY
  • Pay close attention to the uses of persuasion (ethos, logos, pathos, fallacies)
  • Contemplate both sides of the argument
  • Writing:
  • 12-15 sentence response that 1st discusses the argument  as it is presented in the article
  • Next, you will use an academic tone to define onto which side of this argument you fall.  
  • YOU MAY NOT BE A FENCE SITTER; CHOOSE A SIDE.
  • You need to focus on ethos and logos in your response, and avoid the use of pathos and logical fallacy.
  • Write well.  Be better than last week.  And, hopefully more than 26 of you will remember this week so I don't have to give so many zeros.  Goodness Gracious.

Reading Assignment for the week of August 29th!  Response is due on Saturday, Sept. 3rd.

Thus begins our journey into the study of Rhetoric - the art of persuasion.

As you read this piece by Simon Rich, you will notice the hilarity of the scene, but quite quickly, it becomes much more.

You will have to take notes over and be prepared to discuss:
Speaker, occasion, audience, topic, purpose, tone.

DON'T FREAK OUT.  You can do this.  Begin simply:  look at the adjectives and adverbs used to describe nouns and verbs, look at the comparisons and analogies posed in this piece.

You will write a 2 paragraph response, and it needs to be completed by September 3rd at 10pm.  Remember, everything is time stamped.  If you have difficulty posting, let me know by sending your response attached in an email.  Still due by 10pm on September 2nd.  =)
