Islamophobia

Hello, Friends!!

In the articles we read about Islamophobia, your assignment is this:

1)  Study the Audience.  To whom would these articles be directed?  What is their demographic?  How do you know?  Prove it.

2)  Why this Subject?  What makes this so much more relevant than it was 10 years ago?  Why is it important to discuss in a class like ours?

3)  Purpose - what were the authors of these two articles trying to accomplish?  Were their individual purposes met?  Yes?  No?  Prove it.

You need to write about 10 sentences total in responding to the questions asked.  Use textual evidence to defend your positions.

This is easy.  Be thoughtful.  Write well.

    1. The first article seems to be primarily directed towards teachers, while the second is directed towards high school students. More importantly, they are directed towards people who are uninformed about Islam. The way facts are presented is evidence of this. These facts are simple statistics for article one and common misconceptions for article two, which also corresponds towards their respective intended audiences.
    2. Islam has become a highly public issue due to frequent and high profile acts of terror and rhetoric from the recent presidential election. It is an important topic for discussion to address misconceptions related to Islam or Islamic terrorism.
    3. Both articles tried to address isolation or harassment as a result of being Muslim. The first article, addressed to teachers, emphasized a comfortable environment in the education system. The second used a personal story to convey the experiences of a Muslim student. Both of these methods, especially when given the intended audience, are effective in addressing their topic.

    1) The first article I think was directed more towards students and teachers. It talks about the islamophobia in the schools and how muslim students are treated. Also it talks about how the teacher is trying to spread awareness for the religion, so muslims don’t get bullied in school. This article is trying to show how the muslims are treated and school and it pushes for change that’s why I think its directed towards students and teachers. The second article is directed towards everyone in the United States. It talks about racism towards muslims around the country and even by very important and famous people.
    2) This subject was picked because Islamophobia is spreading throughout America due to many things, but mostly to stereotypes and hasty generalizations. It is more relevant now because there is more racism towards muslims and there are issues in our country that involve them such as if the Syrian refugees should be let in to our country and they are muslims. It is important to talk about this in our class, so we are aware of how they are being treated and to make sure we don’t treat them differently.
    3) Yeah the purpose was met they made us aware that muslims are being treated differently everywhere and by a variety of different people. The articles show examples of how Pamela Geller and Donald Trump are acting differently towards them

    1. In the first article it is mainly directed to the teachers and students, and the second article is directed towards everyone in the United States. In the first article it talks about how Muslim students are treated in classes. It also talks about Islamophobia in the schools. The teachers are trying to help the Muslim kids by spreading awareness. In the second article it talks about how Muslims feel unwelcome no matter where they go, and how they can sense people making fun of them.
    2. Islamophobia is more relevant now because of the problems in our country. It is becoming a bigger problem because of stereotypes, and racism towards Muslims. It is important to talk about it in class, so we all know what it is like to live a life like a Muslim, and so we can treat them the same as everyone else.
    3. In both of the articles it is trying to teach you how most Muslim students get treated and how it feels. Both of the articles talk about how they feel when they’re in public places, or what people say about them. They both are effective in getting their message across.

    1) These articles were directed to the general white public to inform them of the dangers of islamophobia. It talks in detail how many Muslim-Americans are discriminated against. “I found that the media’s terminology in reference to Isla m and the Muslim populace holds tremendous effect on how they are perceived.” (Sharim 1). She explains how people view them and how harmful it can be. 2) This is more relevant now than it was ten years ago because more people are afraid of Muslim’s. Also, social media probably had a strong impact on this fear. It is an important issue to discuss because we are learning about different cultures so it is good to learn about one that is often looked down upon.
    3) The purpose was to show the public how wrong it is to discriminate. The purpose was met fairly well and the reason for that is because not everyone will respond positively to the articles. “Donald Trump is calling for a complete and total shut down on all Muslims for entering the United States.” (Sharim 1). He was only one example of most likely multiple people around America, but the article still served at least a small purpose for showing people to treat all people alike.

    1) These articles are directed towards the younger generation who have formed preconceptions about Muslims. Although, it also has the potential of reaching an older audience. Nowadays, people get their news from the media such as Fox, CNN, MSNBC, etc. In the last few years, the news has been flooded with information about ISIS. According to the article "Because of ISIS, Muslims are seen as bad and violent people." What the viewers don't realize is that one group of people doesn't reflect the ideals of every Muslim around the world.
    2) The subject of this article is to strictly inform people about the dangers of Islamophobia. Most people don't understand the basis of the religion and what it stands for but they are being fed biased information by the media. It's important to educate as many people as possible on the subject in order to reduce the prejudices. It's even more important today after what's happening with ISIS. The article states "It's scary, unfair, and weird how we are in the year 2016 and people are allowed to be so openly biased and hateful" It's also especially hypocritically when we're supposed to be a country who stands for freedom.
    3) The purpose is to transform misconceptions into valid knowledge on the subject of the Muslims. The teacher at Mission High School, Fakhra Shah, is accomplishing that goal every semester through her unit on Islamophobia in her social change and critical thinking class. The lesson "allows her students to feel more acceptance and understanding."

    1. Both articles are directed toward students and teachers to inform them the truth about Muslims and Islamophobia. Other than the information they may have previously heard. The article is showing how Muslims are treated unequally in society today, because of the information people hear about them on t.v, social media, etc. Teachers in schools are doing what they can to protect Muslim students.
    2. The subject here is about Islamophobia in society today. This is an important subject to talk about because people need to become more aware of the issues in our society today. Islamophobia has became a much bigger problem in this past decade because of issues such as 9/11 and ISIS. This is an important subject to talk about in class so that students are informed about the issues in the society around us.
    3. Yes, it is obvious that the authors's purpose was met. Their purpose in these two articles was to inform us (the readers) about the impact of Muslims and the various misconceptions about them. An example of this from the article is the way Donald Trump tries to divide Muslims from the rest of society because of false misconceptions.

1.The first article focuses on students, specifically non-Muslim people in the academic setting. It refers to personal instances of problems of Muslims within a school to educate people on the plights of those who suffer islamphobia. The second focuses on while the same academic setting primarily younger students in an effort to educate the newer generation on the harm it can cause. It highlights personal issues that fellow students face to try and provoke understanding at least.
2.Recently with Trump rising to prominence there has also been an outspoken part of the U.S population who have been emboldened by our new President's negative portrayal of Muslims. This rhetoric isn't necessarily new but it has become more amplified after Trump's campaign. The proposal to ban Muslims, the demonization of them, and the resulting growth of hate crimes against Muslims are only a few things that's impacted the population in the recent months. Discussion on this is important to understand why people are acting as they are and who those that are being demonized really are.
3.Both articles strive to highlight the inequities Muslims face and how harmful it can be. It aims to bring understanding and tolerance as well as showcase generally how the victims of this abuse are affected. Whether or not their goals were met vary from person to person however. It's entirely subjective on how the reader reacts but based upon my own feelings I find it effective. I hate how Muslims can be subjected to discrimination as well as other persecution. It made me definitely want to reach out and help more.

1.The first article is more directed to students and teachers to help teach people about the realigon. It also supposed to show and help understand the realigon so that Musliums are not bullied in school. It also shows how people are talking about it in schools and how islamphobia is a real thing in schools . The second article is more foucoused on the us population and show how people shouldnt be scared of musliums like most us citzens are.

    2. Islamphobia is such a relavant thing in the us today because of all the problems we’ve had with terroist and everyone thinks all musliums are terroist. With all the sterotypes and rasciasm its all very realvant.

3 Both articles try to give you a peak into a typical day in a life of a muslium and how hard it can be and how much negative things they have to listen to or be subjected to so the articles are both very succesful in getting the message across

    1. The first article is directed toward young people and students. It discusses islamophobia at school and how Muslim students are treated differently from others. "More than half of California's Muslim students have experienced religion-based bullying." The second article is directed toward anyone and shows what life is like through the eyes of a Muslim and how they are treated differently.

    2. This topic is relevant today because of the recent election and how the fear of terrorism has grown. People believe now that all Muslims are behind all of these actions and face unfair treatment. It is important to discuss this in our class because it is just another culture that most people have been around enough to understand.

    3. Both of the articles try to show the reader that Muslims are treated poorly based on the stereotypes around them. The point is clear but it is up to the people to actually make a change and realize it is wrong.

1.The article is directed towards teachers, the second is towards high school students also to people who don’t know about Islam. The article talks about how the students are treated in school. The article mainly talks about islamophobia in schools, to spread awareness. The second article talks about how Muslims are looked down apron where ever they go, and how much they notice how others view them.
2.islamophobia is the topic spreading throughout our country.it is a bigger problem because of stereotypes and racism to Muslim people. It is important to learn in our class because so we all are aware about the people around us. Also, so we know what It is like for them to live with what people think of them.
3.in the articles the author was trying to teach us how Muslims students get treated in school and the label they get. Both articles talk about how they feel when they’re in public and what others say and think about them. They both make the message very clear.

The articles are directed to those who believe all muslims are bad. The majority of the people who believe that are those who follow Donald Trump and a majority of them are white folks. I know this because all throughout history its usually the white people who are racist or feel “unsafe” all because they think they know everything.” Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is calling for a complete and total shutdown on all muslims from entering the united states” Islamophobia is more relevant today because of ISIS, and its important to talk about it in our class because the media and stupid people fill our young minds with false accusations and wanting to have the upper hand on everything and everyone. The two authors were trying to accomplish on opening up peoples minds and eyes into seeing that not every Muslim is a terrorist and a bad person like ISIS and their not horrible people like what trump is trying to make everyone believe They also want to show other people not only from their religion but from other religons and just everyone that has been through something like this themselves that they are not alone. “the lesson not only raises awareness, but allows her students to feel more acceptance and understanding”. I believe their individual purposes were met because now more people are starting to realize that not every muslim is bad and that they just want to live their life and life the American dream just like everyone else. “ American is my home in fact its all I’ve ever known”.

    1. In the first article I think that it is mainly directed towards teachers. It explains how muslim students are feeling mistreated in their own school when really they’re just like any other student. The article focuses on Islamophobia specifically in schools, and how teachers as well as other students are very unfair and stereotypical just because of their religion. I think that the second article is directed towards U.S. citizens. Hannah Sharim talks about how the people in her own home country make her feel unwanted, and not just her but how all muslims are mistreated no matter where they go. I think overall both of these articles are directed towards people who are unaware and not properly educated about the Islam religion and that’s why so many stereotypes are made about muslims.
    2. The subject is that Islamophobia is becoming a larger issue that many people are just oblivious to. Muslims are being judged even more now than they were 10 years ago since there has been more recent terrorist attacks and because of Trump’s opinion on them. It’s important that we learn about this in school so that we can help prevent Islamophobia from spreading even more, and we ourselves can be more aware of the Islam religion and treat them just like we would any other person and not as a muslim.
    3. Both articles really emphasized how muslims are being treated very poorly and discriminated against. I think that yes, both articles did reach their purpose of effectively explaining the religion and what muslims experience first hand every single day. It was also explained how even our own president wants to begin preventing muslims from entering the United States, which helped show that Islamophobia is a real problem.

1.I believe both articles are more directed towards students and teachers informing them about the life of the muslims and how they are treated unequal in society. This is only because the things people see and hear from tv, magazines and the news, which causes them to treat them like that. In this article they are discussing the children and how they act in school, and how we they ( the schools) need to spread awareness for islamophobia.

2.Islamophobia is relevant because it is harsh to Muslims that we are so quick to believe and treat them any differently because of the stereotypes and the hasty generalization towards them. Because of the racism and the problems going on in the US today, such as terrorism is another reason why this is relevant. It is important to get this information across in schools around the United States, so students can become more aware of what is going on around them and that there is no reason to treat them indifferently.

3.The authors purpose was definitely reached, as it was trying to inform whomever was reading the article about the misconceptions and the many stereotypes towards muslims around us today. They discuss how the muslims feel about it and that’s what hopefully makes the audience realize the truth about this article.

    1. The first article is directed towards teachers in their work setting. Explaining how young Muslims in this generation are mistreated in the school setting. The main focus of this article was how Muslims are treated in school being teachers and students as well. Article two was directed toward citizens of the U.S. The author talks mainly of the stereotypes that come along with being Muslim and how we are very uneducated on the religion.
    2. This topic has recently been given a lot of attention due to attacks around the world that are said to be terroristic. With our focus on the fact that these said to terrorists are Muslim, Islamophobia is easier seen now than 10 years ago especially with some remarks of our newly elected president
    3. These articles were trying to show the uneducated population of Americans what It is really like to be a Muslim in the U.S. They are stereotyped and treated poorly because they express their religion just as we do other religions. I believe they got their point across to many of us who had no idea how harsh the reality was of being a Muslim in America.

    1. The first article is directed at the young generation and educators. This is true because high school students were used to tell personal accounts. It encourages students to be kind and considerate. It addresses adult educators by encouraging them to educate their students to be more kind and loving like Fakhra Shah. The second article is directed both at the youth and older open minded generations. This is true because it was written by a 17-year-old but also speaks about issues like the election and other mature topics.
    2. This subject of Islamaphobia is relevant today for many reasons. Before Mrs. Sudan came in and spoke to our class I knew very little about Islam at all. We all could use a little education on the topic. But even more so the people who automatically hate every single Muslim in the world based on ignorance.
    3. I think the issues both articles discussed wore the acceptance or the lack of acceptance of Muslim people. Both articles encourage readers to be more open minded and educated. I believe both articles achieved what they were after. Both of them were very informative but are only a drop in the bucket compared to the work the Muslim people have left to do.

    1. I believe that the first article is directed mainly at teachers and young students to inform them of the Islamophobia that occurs every day and how Muslims are mistreated in school. The teacher mentioned in the article, Fakhra Shah, teaches her students about the subject and encourages other teachers to do the same. People are uniformed about the religion which makes it easy to have prejudice against Muslims. The second article is directed towards the younger generations who have formed their own opinions of Muslims because of the society we live in. Most people have their preconceived notions about certain groups, such as Muslims. They group all of them together, instead of “a distinction to be made between the acts of extremists and the rest of the peaceful population of Muslims.”
    2. This subject was chosen because of Islamophobia spreading, and because of acts of terrorism that have been committed. It is more relevant now because of the stereotypes and hasty generalizations brought on by the media. It is important we discuss this topic in class so we can gain knowledge about the religion and so we can reduce the amount of prejudices towards Muslims.
    3. The purpose of the article was to demonstrate to us about the discrimination that Muslims face every day and how to change people’s outlooks on them. The individual purposes of the articles were met. In the first article the teacher teaches a unit on Islamophobia “not only to raise awareness, but allows her students to feel more acceptance and understanding.” The second article stated that “to eradicate it, we must refuse to hold an entire faith liable for politically motivated acts.”

    1. The first article seemed to be directed at teachers, and the second article at Americans in general, especially young people. The first article talked about lesson plans and methods for approaching a discussion on Islamophobia. The second article was written by a seventeen year old student who encourages American people to stand out against bigotry by sharing her personal stories and experiences.
    2. The subject of Islamophobia is especially relevant now because more and more acts of terrorism occur each day, and Muslim people are most often blamed for them because of stereotyping. It’s important to learn about this in school in order to become educated on these topics and spread tolerance and acceptance.
    3. Both articles attended to the same idea: discrimination against Muslim people. They both seemed to be giving a similar message that emphasized the importance of being accepting of others who are different from you and educating yourself in order to advocate for those who are being marginalized. I think that both authors accomplished their goal. The first article aimed to provide methods for teaching about social change for educators specifically, and the author achieved that. The second article tried to encourage readers to be more open and accepting to those who seem “other” to you, and she accomplished that as well.

    1. Both of the articles are directed at people who are not muslim and don't understand the religion and therefore may have many misconceptions about it. They are written to take these misconceptions and correct them so that people don't hate and discriminate based on misinformation. The first article is a little more geared towards teachers and how to teach about Islam while the second is more directed at other students.
    2. This subject is way more topical now because in the past 10 years terrorist attacks linked to Islamic extremism have become more common and Islam itself is getting a lot more attention. There are vocal masses preaching about how it's a violent religion but others preaching just as vocally how that's inaccurate. Large numbers of buzzwords thrown around by politicians and people taking information without thinking critically tends to create a large climate of misinformation and general not knowing things which is what is happening with the world's attitude towards Islam.
    3. Both articles had the point of discussing and educating on Islamophobia and why it's harmful and how to avoid it. They both took misconceptions about Islam and smoothed them over and worked to the idea that we should just accept one another.

1.I feel the first article was directed towards the school district, to try and protect all students. I think the second article is directed towards parents and the media, so that they really understand what is going on. The demographic is the young and old because they articles aren’t directed towards just one specific group of people.
2.This subject is very important because the Islamic populous is being attacked and if we start learning about it now then we will be able to change the future. This is more relevant than it was 10 years ago, because of all the attacks made by Al Qaeda and ISIS. The two terrorist groups are making it difficult to be a Muslim anywhere in the world, which isn’t fair to the Muslims who haven’t done anything. This needs to be discussed because it will influence our future as adults.
3.To expose the problems that one group can cause for a whole population. Yes, because they got their articles published so that the world can see what is really happening. “There is no worse feeling than feeling unwelcome in your own home. But despite the false perceptions and unfounded stereotypes I face every day, I refuse to be out casted. America is my home; in fact it’s all I’ve ever known. – Hannah Sharim.”

  20. 1.The first article was directed towards the teachers or school board to try and protect all students. I think the second article is directed towards parents or the media so that they can get an understanding of what is going on. With the writer being a teenage girl, she can tell how people her age today are treated, we don’t always think about kids. Sometimes people tend to group this race all together and look at them as being “evil.”
2.This subject is very important or common because Islamophobia is being attacked and if we take the time to learn about it then we could possibly change the future. This is more relevant than it was 10 years ago because of all the recent attacks made by ISIS who are targeting different countries all over the world. This makes it difficult for muslims because other people of a different race tend to look down upon or shame all muslims because of the actions some choose to take. I think it’s important to discuss early on so kids understand just because someone is a certain ethnicity doesn’t mean they will harm you.
    3. Both articles are trying to express how Muslim students get treated in public places and what people say about them and how it makes them feel. I think this is a successful way of way of getting the point across. “There is no worse feeling than feeling un-welcome in your own home. But despite the false perceptions and unfounded stereotypes I face every day, I refuse to be out casted. America is my home; in fact it’s all I’ve ever known. – Hannah Sharim.”
